How to Add an Email Signature in Mozilla Thunderbird

Complete guide to setting up text and HTML email signatures in Thunderbird. Covers inline signatures, HTML file attachments, and per-account configuration.

Method 1: Inline Text / HTML Signature

The simplest method — paste your signature directly into Thunderbird's settings.

  1. Open Thunderbird and go to Edit → Account Settings (Windows/Linux) or Tools → Account Settings (Mac).
  2. In the left sidebar, select the email account you want to configure.
  3. In the main panel, find the "Signature text" section.
  4. Check the box "Use HTML" (this is critical for formatted signatures).
  5. Paste your HTML signature code into the text area.
  6. Check "Attach this signature" below new messages and/or replies as desired.
  7. Click OK to save.

⚠️ Important: If you don't check "Use HTML", Thunderbird will display your HTML code as plain text instead of rendering it.

Method 2: HTML File Signature (Recommended)

For complex signatures with images and formatting, using an external HTML file is more reliable:

  1. Save your email signature HTML code as a .html file on your computer (e.g., signature.html).
  2. Open Edit → Account Settings.
  3. Select your email account in the left sidebar.
  4. Check "Attach the signature from a file instead".
  5. Click Choose… and navigate to your saved HTML file.
  6. Click OK to save.

This method is better because you can edit the file externally and Thunderbird will always use the latest version.

Setting Different Signatures Per Account

Thunderbird supports multiple email accounts, each with its own signature:

  • In Account Settings, each account listed in the sidebar has its own signature configuration.
  • Click on each account separately and configure its signature independently.
  • You can also set different signatures for identities within the same account (Account Settings → your account → Manage Identities).

Signature Placement Options

Thunderbird lets you control where your signature appears:

  • Below your reply (default) — signature goes after your reply text, above the quoted message.
  • Below the quoted text — signature appears at the very bottom. Go to Edit → Account Settings → Composition & Addressing to change this.

Handling Images in Thunderbird Signatures

Images in Thunderbird signatures work best when hosted online:

  • Hosted images (recommended): Use full URLs like https://yourdomain.com/logo.png. These display for all recipients.
  • Local images: Use file:/// paths. These only work on your computer and won't display for recipients.
  • Embedded images: Thunderbird can embed images as attachments. Check "Compose messages in HTML format" in Composition & Addressing settings.

Troubleshooting Common Thunderbird Signature Issues

Signature shows as raw HTML

You forgot to check "Use HTML". Go back to Account Settings and enable it.

Images not displaying

Use hosted image URLs instead of local file paths. Make sure the image URLs are accessible via HTTPS.

Signature formatting broken

Use the HTML file method instead of inline. Make sure you're using table-based HTML with inline styles.

Signature not appearing on replies

Check Account Settings → Composition & Addressing → "Automatically include my signature" for replies.
